Innovative Micro Data Centre Solution for a Hospital's New Plantroom Facility

Overcoming Dusty and Harsh Environmental Challenges
NSW Health, a major healthcare provider in Western Sydney, undertook a significant expansion by constructing a new complex facility adjacent to their existing hospital. This included a new plant room that required a reliable micro data centre to support the incoming fibre layer 1 switching, essential for hosting the fibre and fibre switching infrastructure.

The Challenge
The new plant room posed several challenges:

  • Dusty Environment: The environment was highly dusty, which could potentially harm sensitive equipment.
  • Heat Management: The plant room experienced high temperatures, complicating cooling requirements.
  • Space Constraints: The solution needed to be compact due to the limited space.
  • Cooling Solutions: Required an efficient cooling system that could manage the heat without relying on external condensers and complex drainage systems.

The Solution
Treske, in collaboration with NSW Health IT, recommended the Rittal RiMatrix
24RU IP5X cabinet equipped with a roof-mounted 1.5KW cooling unit.

Key Features of the Solution

  1. Compact and Integrated Design: The Rittal cooling unit is integrated within the cabinet, eliminating the need for external condensers and drainage systems.
  2. Efficient Cooling: The unit rejects heat effectively and provides cool air within the cabinet, maintaining optimal operating conditions.
  3. Dust Protection: The cabinet is designed to withstand harsh environments with IP5X protection against dust ingress.
  4. Advanced Monitoring: The cooling unit includes IoT sensors for comprehensive network monitoring and integrates with NSW Health's Schneider Electric EcoStruxure IT platform for both reactive and proactive monitoring.
  5. Versatility and Scalability: The solution is highly versatile and scalable to accommodate future need.

Implementation
Treske managed the entire project lifecycle, ensuring seamless execution and high-quality results from start to finish including:

  • Coordination: Collaborated with builders, electrical contractors, and other building contractors to ensure seamless integration.
  • Delivery and Installation: Provided hardware, installation, and connection services, meeting all project deadlines and budget constraints.
  • Testing and Validation: Completed thorough site acceptance tests to ensure the system met all performance and safety standards.

Outcome
The solution was successfully installed and integrated into the hospital’s infrastructure, passing all site acceptance tests. The Rittal RiMatrix cabinet with integrated cooling provided a compact, efficient, and scalable solution to support the plant room's fibre switching needs in a harsh environment.

Treske’s expertise and the chosen Rittal solution ensured NSW Health could operate their new facility with reliable and efficient IT infrastructure, maintaining compliance with industry standards and safety requirements.
